On the last day of the Gibara International Film Festival, an exchange between actors and participants in the event was held at the local Casa de la Cultura, with the participation of figures such as Flora Borrego, Enrique Bueno, Félix Beatón, Jorge Perugorría, Bárbaro Marín, René de la Cruz and Mirta Ibarra, as reported by journalist Carlos Rodríguez Rubio for Radio Angulo.
The prestigious artists said they were happy to return to Gibara, “this magical place discovered by Humberto Solás, and see that while the Festival is still alive, the dream that gave birth to it is still alive”.
Perugorría added that this occasion is special because Sergio and Aldo are at the head of the Festival, an event in the hands of Solás family. They thanked the ICAIC and the government of Holguin for defending and betting on keeping the Festival alive in these complex economic times.
They also emphasized on the importance of this Festival for Cuban cinema, and that the true protagonists of the Festival are the people of Gibare, who give it its magic and human warmth, as well as the spiritual and physical transformation of Villa Blanca.
As in the previous edition, the Festival counted with collateral juries such as that of the Cine Clubs, chaired by Lázaro L. Alderete, and the Youth Jury, which was composed of 12 members, with gender parity, and six of them from Gibara.
The jury’s decision was announced on the last day at the Hotel Plaza Colón where the Young Jury recognized as best fiction feature film to: “Pettite nature” (France, Dir. Samuel Theis); the Best Fiction Short Film Award to: “Paris 70” (Spain, Dir. Dani Feixas Roca); the Best Documentary Feature Film went to “Cosme, un enorme juego con el tiempo” by Holguin filmmaker Alejandra Rodríguez Segura and finally the award for Best Documentary Short Film: Todos los días son 8 de marzo (Cuba, Dir. Lizette Vila).
The prizes awarded by the film clubs were: Best Documentary Feature Film for “Retorno” (Cuba, Dir. Blanca Rosa Blanco) and Best Documentary Short Film: “Fantasmagoría” (Chile, Dir. Juan Francisco González).
